  • Text (english):

For Joya: arte + ecología’s SENDA project, I propose an intervention that reflects on one of the more representative ecosystems of the semiarid zones of the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa: the ‘espartal’ (esparto field). Under the plants of esparto there’s a soil with better bioclimatic conditions and more fertility than the soils nearby. That’s why it’s considered that esparto creates ‘resource islands’ that encourage the growth of vegetation that helps to fix the soil and keep the moisture.

My project, ‘Islas de recursos’, aims to give an arts perspective to the research process about the importance of the use of esparto fibre to control the erosion and the re-vegetation in semiarid zones. The design of several ‘bio-rolls’ made of esparto which will be installed in a ‘cárcava’ aims to create a space protected from the direct impact of the drops of rain and sun exposure. This will keep a stable temperature in the ground and will avoid the evaporation of water. The plant texture of the mesh will increase the roughness of the ground, which will decrease water run-off . This structure will also facilitate the retention of soil particles and seeds that will allow plants to grow between the interstices of the mess, helping fix and regenerate the ground with new vegetation.

Each piece has a word embroidered that references both the effect of the organic rolls on the land and a possible more balanced poetic interaction of the human being with the landscape that surrounds us:  to shelter, to secure, to recover, to filter, to purify, to soften, to nurture.
